the stories behind our bespoke pieces
black walnutBAR
this piece was commissioned because the client wanted a midcentury modern bar but couldn’t find one that fit the dimensions of their space, or did but didn’t have the details and quality they desired. the bar includes custom designed legs to mimic a stiletto heels, brass hollin hills logo inlay, brass foot bar, glass backing on the interior to reflect the light, brass shelf holes and pins, and a made on marthas brass emblem.
sapele wood + glassHOLLIN HILLS FRONT DOOR + WINDOW
this classic design is often seen in big box stores and online however it usually is not made in a superior wood such as black walnut, and the quality is lacking. so we made our own version with perfect proportions for people who aren’t over 6’ 4” (although we can update proportions for taller people).
black walnutZ CHAIR
a full porch renovation begged for a classic charles goodman hollin hills-style door but white was too expected and got lost with the updated flooring and siding. a sapele wood and glass door with the matching trim for the door and window were built to keep the historical aesthetic and lines while making a showpiece of a door with the sapele wood.
black walnut + brassHERMAN MILLER-INSPIRED DAY BED
we loved the idea of the herman miller day bed but wanted something made of black walnut and brass instead of plywood or other inferior products found at retailers and wanted the dimensions to perfectly fit our living room. so we made our own. the upholstery was complete by daniel donnelly. it is now fondly called the nap trap because it’s that comfortable.
sapele + brassFOLDABLE STANDING DESK
living in a smaller home, storage space is limited. we wanted a standing desk under which a walking pad could fit. when the desk wasn’t being used, we wanted it to be light so it could be folded up and stored. in addition to this list, we also wanted something hardwood and beautiful with a brass accent with a design that caught pens/pencils so they did not slide off the desk while working. absolutely nothing online or in stores could be found that didn’t look industrial, corporate, or plastic. so we built it ourselves.
reclaimed oak treeCOFFEE TABLE
hollin hills is surrounded by big, beautiful, mature tress, which is what makes it feel like living in a park. when we first moved in, we had a large oak that was dying and needed to come down. we kept a piece of the tree and turned it into a coffee table so the tree can live on in our home.
black walnut + brassURN
corey honored his mom by making a custom designed urn in black walnut with brass splines and a floating top for his mom’s ashes.
oakCLOSET DOORS + BUILT INS
closet space is limited in midcentury modern homes to encourage minimalism. the closet space was a closet below with sliders and a storage cubby above. demo was completed and it was all made into one space with custom built-ins. the doors were made to be floor to ceiling to raise they eye up while allowing for a complete use of all the space behind them. the doors’ inlay design was custom made with flowing wood grain.
black walnutWATERFALL KITCHEN ISLAND
the client wanted a 2-sided kitchen island extension made of black walnut that overlayed her quartz countertop. multiple pieces of wood over 12 feet tall were milled down to create the waterfall effect where the grain continuously flows from the top of the counter down the side. the edges were then “eased” match the profile of the quartz countertops.
reclaimed oakEND TABLES
a neighbor had an oak desk that she was getting rid of. so we used the wood to create floating nightstands that made the best use of the space in our room to fit in the smaller space on the side of the bed and to be off the floor to aesthetically make the area feel more open.
black walnutSHELF
purchasing a cabinet from a store, unfortunately they did not sell additional shelves to make the piece as practical as it could be for this client. she commissioned a solid black walnut shelf (instead of the plywood with black walnut veneer like the shelves it came with) to match the other shelves and make the space have more storage.
just for funCOCKTAIL POOL + FOUNTAIN
while we won’t be taking commissions for trough pools, we included this project to display our vibes. fun and unique while still being sophisticated. this is probably one of the nicest trough pools out there. while we won’t take commissions for this, we are happy to tell you how we did it.
why won’t we take a commission for a trough pool? they are fabulous but they aren’t an heirloom piece and because of their wear and tear and life expectancy, we just can’t put our name on them.
